E.Plakas: How important the USA traveler is for the Aegean Islands?

The US American travel outbound market is among the top 5 most important markets in Greece, according to official data.

For the South Aegean Islands and especially for Mykonos and Santorini islands, US American outbound market is the number one, based on the number of arrivals, receipts and overnight stays.

US American visitors, according to the Bank of Greece, are spending almost the half of the total expenses are being made in the South Aegean islands (45,2%) while in Attica they spent about 44% of the total expenses in the region.

For our islands, especially Mykonos and Santorini, US Americans as the “ideal” visitors because of their quality aspects of their travel behavior.

E.Plakas: What are these aspects;

US American visitors have a high educational and income profile. They seek high-quality services and when they are satisfied they turn into repeaters.

For all these reasons, it is a major challenge for us to keep and attract more US American visitors in our islands as well as to create unique services to meet their needs.

E.Plakas: How many US American visitors do they come in Greece every year?

More than 807 thousand US American visitors came to Greece in 2017, while the prospects look positive for the coming years.

Since, around 32 millions US Americans traveled abroad in 2016, according to IPK International survey, there is great potential for Greece to attract more visitors.

E.Plakas: How do you think, this could be achieved?

Join efforts and coordinated actions are required in order for us to attract more US American visitors.

First of all, there is a positive climate for Greece in the USA, which could and should be cultivated more by all actors.

As far as Mykonos – Santorini – Aegean Islands Promo is concernedwe have been successfully participating in the top international tourism exhibition of New York, “The New York Times Travel Show” for the last four (4) years.

We cooperate with Greek and American tour operators, whose field is luxury tourism and we communicate our efforts through targeted promotion in selected media.

We also plan and implement promotional strategies for our islands in the USA, under the auspices of the Greek-American Chamber of Commerce of New York.

In all our actions, we promote both our premium members, who provide high quality luxury services as well as the authentic features of the destinations.

E.Plakas: Do you think that there are markets that you have not fully established?

We believe that the outbound tourism market of Latin America has a great potential for our destinations but we don’t have been fully established yet.

Latin-Americans made around 73,4 million trips in 2017, according to Euromonitor International.

Although, Latin Americans are not the “big spenders” of global tourism, their travel expenses are increasing the recent years.

Within this context, we are planning to approach high profile Latin – American visitors through targeted actions in the coming years. We have already conducted B2B meetings with major Brazil tour operators in Florianopolis and participated in the first tourism workshop “Mykonos Approach”, which was organized by Tourism Department of South Aegean Region and the Vice-Governor of Culture, Mr.Briggos in cooperation with the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of Santa Catarina. Four Greek hotels among best boutique hotels

The article focuses on the top 50

Boutique hotels are the catwalk models of the accommodation world: sleek, sexy, dressed to impress and Instagrammable at every turn. Whether in the city or the country, beside the sea or in the mountains, with four bedrooms or 45 (though no more than that), the best of them are cool and stylish, glossy and bespoke, designed to pique the interest, stimulate the senses and make serious hotel junkies of us all.

Hotels were never desirable before boutiques hit the scene. You could be impressed or comforted by them but you never wanted to inhabit them, to take them home. But that’s the point: successful boutique hotels have all the qualities of home, only lovelier, and without the work. They are the ultimate in lifestyle living.

Ammos Hotel
Chania, Crete, Greece

A seaside hotel that’s both family-friendly and style-conscious is surprisingly hard to find. This cute little number ticks all the boxes: cool but unstuffy design, sandy beach, heated pool, babysitters on tap, and home-cooked Cretan food that will keep even the pickiest of eaters happy. Facilities are especially great for younger children. There’s yoga lessons and top-notch massages for parents.

Perivolas
Santorini, Greece

The hotel that put Oia on the map and spawned countless imitators, Perivolas is in a league of its own. Minimalist suites carved from the cliffs are almost as dazzling as the sea views. The infinity pool is the stuff of honeymooners’ dreams – everyone looks like a swimwear model in this fabulous setting.

Bill & Coo Suites and Lounge
Mykonos, Greece

Luxurious simplicity sets the mood here where pool, lounge and restaurant spaces are centred around a stunning view of the Aegean Sea. The minimalist suites feature a sea-view balcony and several have private pools. The hotel is also home to one of the best restaurants on the island.

Kensho
Mykonos, Greece

On an island full of archetypal white villas, Kensho must be one of the most beautiful, thanks to its contemporary take on Cycladic chic. Whitewashed walls and stone floors are complemented by blonde wood, stone walls and neutral décor, with modern art and design throughout. In the restaurant, a 10-course gastronomy menu offers a contemporary take on Greek fine dining.

Greece on list of most hospitable places on the planet

Seemingly everyone around the world dreams of taking a vacation in Greece, and apparently, they are on to something. Greece has just been named one of the “Most Hospitable Places in the World” in a report released by Booking.com.

What is it about Greece that people find so welcoming? Let’s take a look.

Greece has beautiful natural sights, including islands and archaeological sites, as well as great food. And Greeks are well-known for being excellent hosts when tourists visit their country. But this is not only because the country depends greatly on tourism.

Greece is the home of “filoxenia”, which loosely translated means “friend of strangers”. They have historically been known to be inviting to other Greek travelers from distant lands. Greeks are so proud of their history and culture — of both ancient times and what they have achieved in modern society.

It should be no surprise that based on Booking.com’s 2018 Guest Review Awards, Greece received the honor of being included on the list of the most welcoming places on earth.

This is the seventh edition of the annual report, which evaluates of hundreds of thousands of properties across 219 countries and territories.

The final results, released by booking.com, show that the most welcoming countries are, in descending order, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, New Zealand, Taiwan, Romania, Hungary, Ireland, Serbia, and Greece.

Revealing the other side of Mykonos

“Mykonos: The Other Side” is a documentary taking viewers beyond the party scene of Mykonos, to reveal a multitude of facets

The island of Mykonos is synonymous with days spent lying in the sun and partying. However beyond the pristine beaches, sculpted bodies parading around, and 24/7 party scene, the Cycladic island has much of great substance to offer its visitors.

For Sydney-based filmmaker Billy Cotsis, he admits it took at least five visits to realize this, and to fully understand and fall in love with ‘the other side’ of the island.

“Too many people, myself included, come for the parties,” he told Neos Kosmos.

“‘The other side’ is the non-commercial elements; the quieter beaches, the ghost town at the old mines, churches in the hundreds, villages such as Ano Mera which counter balance the hustle and bustle of Mykonos Town, and Delos, which is just a 20 minute boat ride away.

“The camaraderie of the workers from everywhere, be it Greece, Greeks from abroad, Europe, and the world – everyone seems to look after each other.”

Which is what he sets out to capture in his latest documentary Mykonos: The Other Side.

Co-produced with fellow Greek Australian filmmaker, London-based Basil Genimahaliotis, the idea was conceptualized by the pair in 2017, and realized on location in Mykonos over just seven days, incorporating additional footage from London and Sydney.

The film features a number of locals and internationals, who call the island home, including a group of Australians who live and work there. Their personal narratives, their commitment to the island and the challenges that come with trying to make ends meet in a struggling economy, show viewers a side of Mykonos few tourists have the chance to see.

“We try to present a series of chapters, and there is no escaping the party, [but] once we eliminate the fun part, we get to unpack what Mykonos is: the island of culture, a thriving economy, architecture, the arts, hidden gems and ‘characters’ on the stage that is Mykonos,” says Cotsis.

Among the characters featured are 25-year dancing veteran, Tekno ‘Mr Mykonos’ Manos from Bay Vista, Brighton, film director Antonis Theocharis Kioukas, American author Jeffery Siger, actress Anta Paparapti, Gege Silva the Drag Queen, Anna Moskalova from Hair Lab, and Nicholas Theodoridis who works at Vegera by the old harbour, who used his local knowledge to connect the filmmakers with many of their subjects.

“These are just some of the people who appear and help tie the narrative together,” says Cotsis. “We actually have enough footage to make a second documentary – you have no idea how easy it is to capture stories on Mykonos. There is something about the island that makes people open up.”

Cotsis’ own relationship with Mykonos is an interesting one. The filmmaker says he first happened upon the island “by accident” while island hopping in 2004.

Given the reputation of its commercial side, he admits he never had a desire to visit. But after that chance encounter, he couldn’t deny the pull.

“As much as I tried to fight it, I finally admitted that I love Mykonos and the fact that it sets an example as a leader for the tourism industry,” he says.

“It has what many places in the world do not; a level of sophistication, history, support for arts, a viable economy and resilience.

“I want people to understand that Mykonos is one of the most cultured places in the world. Yes of course you can party; however, if you scratch the cultural surface you will find a different Mykonos, which will come out in the film.”

Thanks to local support from the Mytilenean Brotherhood of Sydney & NSW, Bay Vista in Brighton, MerakiTv Foxtel and Hellenic Central, Mykonos: The Other Side will make its world premiere at GU Film House Beverly Hills next month.

Set to be presented by Greek Australian filmmaker and writer Alex Lykos, attendees will be treated to a double screening together with Cotsis and Genimahaliotis’ last documentary Lesvos: Fall in Love.

“We need media that is not going to be playing politic kind of games”

– A message from Father Alex Karloutsos of Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox – Church of Hamptons.
Father Alex Karloutsos, assistant to Archbishop Demetrios of America, Spiritual Advisor to the order of Saint Andrew Archons, of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America and to Faith: An Endowment of Orthodoxy and Hellenism.

Βy Phyto Stratis

Father Alex talked to Hellenic Daily News about the facilities of this beautiful Greek Orthodox Church and its role in the community.

This church is all dedicated to the Holy Mother, everything about it, even the inscriptions in the dome, everything, comes from the Holy Mother. It is truly a very unique complex. At the front, you see the mosaic, eight hundred and fifty thousand pieces of Murano glass, and they are all part of the Jewish followers of Christ -early Christians.

What about the interior of the church, the iconography and the Dome?

They’ve been working on it for two years. George Philippakis has been working with somebody who is a scholar and they guided us, but Father Ioakim Kotsonis disciplined everything. We just got done completed with the dome. It has the traditional Pantocrator which is surrounded by a rainbow. The rainbow come from the tradition of Noah and the Arc, and the covenant, they knew that God brought piece to the earth, by sending a rainbow to Noah. So that’s around the Pantocrator, and then we have what they call the celestial liturgy, the liturgy of the archangels around the Pantocrator, and then we have the prophets, all of the prophecies talk about the Holy Mother, then the four evangelists. In the altar itself we have another liturgy going on, and that’s the liturgy of the Saints; then we do the third liturgy. So you have the liturgy of the Saints, the Celestial and then you have the liturgy here on earth that we do.

Could you talk to us about “Muses”?

“Muses” is our Cultural Center. There, (at the front of the building) we have “The School of Athens” which is a copy of Rafael’s piece at the Vatican .It has seven hundred fifty thousand of Murano glass, and it shows the underpinnings of Western Civilization, as the Reign called it -the morning star of the western world-. We have a lot of non-Greeks but they come to liturgy, and come to our community. We have 37 nationalities, many of them have become Orthodox, we have an outdoor baptistery for adults, and we do adult baptism out here as well, so we are very fortunate. Father Constantine is the passion with me, does a great job, and we have a Greek language program; A Russian language program, a Romanian language program and a Georgian language program. We try to bring all the Orthodox family together and if there was a Turkish Orthodox community, we would teach Turkish language as well.

How do you feel about The Hellenic Daily News which is a Greek American Internet Service where it promotes news and updating news to the community?

Well, first of all I believe that is better for the community to connect than disconnect and I also believe that we need media that is not going to be playing politic kind of games, and just talking about the truth of our community and not trying to destroy each other but build up each other, and I know that Eva (Evageline Plakas) has always believed in building up neither than tearing down and unfortunately, sadly, often times Greeks try tear down each other rather than build up each other, and in this community we build up.

H1 2018 balance of travel services in Greece significantly up

Travel and tourism revenue in Greece significant increased over the Jan-May 2018 period, compared to the same period in 2017, the country’s central bank (BoG) announced on Tuesday, citing higher tourism arrivals and an increase in average daily spending per trip.

Specifically, the BoG statement reads:

“Balance of travel services

Based on provisional data, the balance of travel services in May 2018 showed a surplus of €1,273 million, compared with a surplus of €921 million in May 2017. More specifically, travel receipts in May 2018 rose by 34.7% to €1,475 million from €1,095 million in May 2017, but this increase was partly offset by a 16.0% rise in travel payments (May 2018: €202 million, May 2017: €174 million). The increase in travel receipts is attributed to a 23.6% increase in inbound traveller flows, as well as to a rise of 10.7% or €56 in average expenditure per trip. Net receipts from travel services offset 91.4% of the goods deficit and accounted for 76.8% of total net receipts from services.

In January-May 2018, the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €1,590 million, up from a surplus of €1,275 million in the same period of 2017. This development was due to an increase in travel receipts (by €449 million or 21.7%), which was partly offset by a rise in travel payments (by €134 million or 16.8%). The rise in travel receipts was driven by a 16.8% increase in inbound traveller flows and by a rise of 5.4% or €24 in average expenditure per trip. Net receipts from travel services offset 20.0% of the goods deficit and accounted for 52.2% of total net receipts from services.

Among major countries of origin, receipts from Germany rose by 87.6% to €411 million, as did receipts from France, by 27.0% to €95 million. In particular, receipts from euro area residents rose by 38.8% to €1,185 million, while receipts from residents of non-euro area EU28 countries also increased, by 27.5% to €549 million. American tourists to spend over $100 billion in 2018, survey finds

Allianz insurance found American tourists overspend during their vacations

Allianz Global Assistance found 10 per cent of Americans admit to going over budget while on vacation last year, and those who did, on average, overspent by 27 per cent ($534).

Breaking down by age group, 92 per cent of Millennials (ages 18-34) and 91 per cent of Baby Boomers (ages 55+) did not overspend, while 87 per cent of Gen X’ers (ages 35-54) were able to stay within budget. Gen X’ers also tend to overspend more, averaging 32 per cent over budget, which amounts to $836 based on their anticipated spend, while Millennials overspent by 26 per cent ($362) and Baby Boomers overspent by 20 per cent ($369).

The 2018 survey reveals that the average anticipated spend on vacations this summer, $1,936, has decreased slightly from last year when it was $1,978. Still, the projected total spend will crack the $100 billion mark for the second time in the survey’s history, amounting to $100,400,000,000.

Allianz has analyzed American travellers’ summer vacation spending habits, revealing that Americans are forecasted to spend over 20 per cent (23.5 per cent) more than they did in 2010, when the average anticipated spend was $1,653.

The survey also shows that 46 per cent of Americans typically take an annual summer vacation, a three per cent decrease from 2017, while 53 per cent does not. However, 18 per cent of Americans has taken a vacation in the past three months, up four per cent in 2017, which may explain both the decrease in those taking a summer vacation and the decrease in spending.

Greece Sotheby’s International Realty COO meets the Ambassador of Aegean Islands : “Mykonos equal to Ibiza, Majorca and Capri”. ( Project Aegean islands Promo – Mykonos Promo – Santorini Promo)

Meeting with Mrs. Natalie Leontaraki, Vice Principal & Chief Operating Officer – COO of Greece Sotheby’s International Realty with Mr. Kostas Skagias, Ambassador of Aegean Islands & Strategy Manager of Project Aegean Islands Promo.

Under the new direction of mr. Savvas Savvaides as the President and mrs. Natalie Leontaraki as the Vice President, as well as with new goals, Greece Sotheby’s International Realty has been active in Greece since last October, delivering a big and interesting message: “High-income individuals from all over the world who love Greece and are more than keen on obtaining their own house here.” Greece Sotheby’s International Realty’s objective is the sale of luxury houses, for private use, everywhere in Greece. The company’s love as well as its international network of buyers, which has been in its possession for many years now, has resulted in accomplishing high sales since the beginning of October of 2016 at that, satisfying thus the buyer as well as the seller.

What is the dominant advantage of the company, one would ask. That it can, of course, promote the properties in an international clientele offering potential high-income buyers as to ensure a good sale based on the proper valuation of the property. Greece Sotheby’s International Realty has as its lower sales limit 1.000.000 euros, which to us, as average consumers, could sound quite high, to the network of its buyers though it sounds more than reasonable. Let us not forget, however, that Sotheby’s begun its course as an Auction House and it has maintained an indissoluble relationship for decades now with the world’s most financially powerful businessmen – collectors!

Talking numbers, we should mention briefly that Sotheby’s International Realty has in its possession nine hundred offices in 68 countries with at least 21.000 agents around the world. It constitutes the number one company with an annual income of 82 billion euros, of which the 37 billion have been accomplished in Europe alone. Still it does not cease to be the first and strongest force in the field of Real Estate in the United States of America.

According to Mrs. Leontaraki, Greece Sotheby’s International Realty considers that, regarding the Aegean and Ionian islands, the following ones hold the first place, concerning the preference of the buying community: Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Ios, Tinos and Syros for the Aegean as well as Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos for the Ionian. An interest, however, is also shown regarding the coastal parts of Southern Athens, since one can enjoy the sea, having around them at the same time the intense life of Athens.

It is worth mentioning that the island of Mykonos is already, in terms of purchasing interest, at the same level with the islands of Ibiza, Majorca and Capri, and Greece Sotheby’s International Realty is aiming to continue including the best properties of Mykonos in its porfolio. Despite the current adversities, Greece Sotheby’s International Realty considers that there is still plenty of ground for the development of the islands and, as Mrs. Leontaraki said: “Mykonos, Paros and all the islands that are to renovate and improve their airports, will have a significant increase in both the value of their properties and the economic power of their visitors”.

In conclusion, let’s mention that the biggest interest in buying a residence here comes from Greek-Americans and Americans, second in line come the Germans followed by the French, the Swiss and the Belgians in third place.
