I’m assuming Error 50 is just related to the fact that I tried to upgrade my edition from and to ServerStandard. My research in other threads as shown a few people complaining that if you install Standard as a VM, and add the DC Role to it before activating, it will not activate afterwards. Has anyone heard of that or have a best practice for resolving the issue? More Info here on that.
You can go from Standard to DataCenter but not the other direction. Creating a domain controller as evaluation and converting to licensed is not supported but also not blocked. Thanks for the suggested order of operations. We might just start over on this one as suggested.
We didn’t do server updates or activate before trying to add the DC Role. The host is, as you said, the only one running DataCenter right now, and it’s fine. Also, this is a new domain from scratch.
